Open meeting of residents – 29 June 2017 7.30 pm

The meeting was called by Houndwood Community Group, a group of residents who love living here and want to make it a better, safer place to live.

The purpose of the meeting is to hear what issues matter to the residents so we can work out ways together to work on any issues raised.

OUTPUT FROM THE GROUPS OF RESIDENTS ON THE NIGHT IN ORDER OF RESIDENTS’PRIORITY:

  1. Speed of traffic and road safety

Parking was an issue for lots of the residents, especially as it reduces access for emergency vehicles and people are parking on the pavements, restricting access for pedestrians

Should we consider a parking scheme to identify non-residents and visitors?

Too many people drive too fast; there should be a lower limit  – 15 mph – across the estate

There should be more and more effective sleeping policemen

Right of way at junctions is designed to be unclear, so some people drive across with no care

  1. Roads and street lights

Many areas of block paving have been and still need to be repaired

The street lighting is ineffective/not working and in places, there is not even enough light even if it is working

People have complained to Barratt and Crest about these and other issues but get poor response

Roads need to be re-designed in some places, especially corners and junctions – push to get this done before it is handed over to Premier Estates?

Barratt residents have had bills for maintenance and when they are challenged they get poor responses. Little maintenance is being done. And Crest residents have not even been billed.

Generally, there are lots of things in the estate in bad condition

  1. Litter and dog waste

Additional dog waste bin needed on green or replace the one that is missing

There is builders waste left by some houses

Wildlife and pond areas are neglected

Benches on Lime Tree Square attract young people at night; lots of litter left as a result

  1. Play equipment

There was supposed to be a play area on the green according to the original Crest Nicholson plans.

Most people at the meeting had concerns that if there was a play area it might be:

  • Expensive to construct and just another thing to maintain
  • Attractive to young people when not in use by the younger children

Better maybe to:

  • Put goal posts up on one-half of the green (there are some for this purpose in the Barratt compound)
  • Do some further landscaping to make the green more interesting and possibly divide into separate dog walking and play areas
  • Use the money Crest will save in not putting play equipment in as a bargaining chip for other improvements
  1. Broadband speed

This seemed to be an issue only for a few of the residents; others thought the speeds available were okay

Improved speeds should be coming in 5 months. You can find out about how this might improve your broadband speed at this BT link:

The fibre journey. Our fibre availability checker shows you if you can get fibre broadband to your home or property. In most cases, it will give the result …

Please note: The “Register your interest” option has been changed to Landlords only.

  1. Other stuff – items raised that were not on the original lists from the residents’ survey

There is an informal path from one end California Parade onto the path through the wildlife area into the Cranhill Rd car park – this could be surfaced to make walking through safer. It is also dark because the street light is out.

A lot of front doors look very bad because the paint has faded – residents not sure if they can paint their front doors

Might be good to have a map in the notice board showing the locations of bins and dog waste bins

Could we run a cycling safety course for kids?

Have a post box

Website to publicise the issues

ACTIONS DISCUSSED ON THE NIGHT:

  1. Speed of traffic and road safety

We have the option to work with the local police to hold Speed Watch sessions where residents are trained to operate speed cameras and report people to the police

We can encourage all residents to note down and report any supplier/delivery drivers to both the supplier company and also to the group, so we can threaten estate-wide boycotts of persistent offenders

We will meet with Liz Leyshon and other councillors from the County Council, District Council and PACT to pursue the following issues:

  • Can we set up a 15 mph limit across the estate?
  • How can we restrict traffic speeds, sleeping policemen etc.?
  • We need to check that the design of the estate conforms to the County Council’s own rules and modify where necessary, inc. road sizes and speeds, pavements, sizes of parking spaces and garages

Should we consider a parking scheme to identify non-residents and visitors?

  1. Roads and street lights

We will continue to meet and challenge out contacts at Crest and Barratt re:

  • Many areas of block paving have been and still need to be repaired
  • The street lighting is ineffective/not working and in places there is not even enough light even if it is working
  • Poor responses to residents’ complaints
  • Roads need to be re-designed in some places, especially corners and junctions – push to get this done before it is handed over to Premier Estates?
  • Wildlife and pond areas are neglected
  • Appeal to Clarks family and their wish list for the estate

2.a Poor level on maintenance on the estate and the service charges sent to some but not all residents

Barratt residents have had bills for maintenance and when they are challenged they get poor responses. Little maintenance is being done. And Crest residents have not even been billed.

Should we survey all residents about the bills for maintenance?

  1. Litter and dog waste

Please try to report to the Mendip District Council Dog Warden Service all incidents of people not clearing up after their dogs

  1. Parking

Could we look at ways for the residents to let neighbours use allocated parking spaces that they do not use themselves?

  1. Broadband speed

Improved speeds should be coming in 5 months. You can find out about how this might improve your broadband speed at this BT link:
